Charleston Charm
I love to blend a laid-back, bohemian vibe with strong architectural elements. Organic shapes inspire me, and creating asymmetry is key because it adds an intriguing dimension to my design. I strive to establish a strong connection between the interiors, the architecture, the location, and the surrounding views. By playing off the materiality of the space, we create a cohesive and relaxing experience for anyone who walks through the doors of the homes, hotels, or restaurants we design.
But “I wasn’t trained in any rules,” she says, noting that for her, design is all about the right mix. Cortney Bishop is among the designers today who are redefining Southern style. Imbuing spaces that would typically lean more traditional with sculptural furniture, brighter colors, and playful accents, her interiors feel fresh and contemporary while remaining still very much of their place.
Primitive Modern
My mother managed everything on her own, but I need that person to bounce things off of, whether it was my original partner or my very first hire, Leigh, who’s still here. That one person turned into another person, which turned into another person—and even if we didn’t have the jobs to support three or four people, we still figured it out and made it fun. [Sometimes that meant asking] if someone could work part-time for a while, but we somehow held it together—even through the economic crash, [when we were] doing nonprofit events or parties to hang on. I found a job at a design gallery that sold beautiful furniture and art with a design firm connected to the business, and I attached myself to one of the designers and learned everything I possibly could for two years. And then I asked her to leave with me and start our own business. For five years, we [ran] Barlow and Bishop together, and we were great.
I can also go ahead and pull the trigger on beautiful, unique pieces that are reasonably priced—quilts and bedding and beautiful textiles—the things you might not find at the last minute. We enjoy buying pottery from our vintage dealers. We probably install 15 to 20 pieces in every home, but we don’t specify it until we install. I love that your team has stayed with you for so long. How have you cultivated that, and how did you know when it was time to grow? I never could have been an interior designer on my own.
In Living Color
We’re pushing people to be more relaxed and playful. Georgia O’Keeffe and Cy Twombly are two artists I would love to collect someday. Photography was what I could collect in my twenties and thirties. I have works by Sally Mann, of course, and Mona Kuhn. The South is about storytelling — it’s part of who we are. Telling stories from the past in a fresh, new way is exciting to me.
I always knew if I ever did a collaboration, it would be in textiles. When we lived in England, my father would take me with him to Holland & Sherry, where he had his suits made. Three months after my father passed away, I got a call from Bryan Dicker, president of the company. He was going to be in Charleston and wanted to come by and thank me for the business I’d given them over the years. We met, and the collection went into production eight months later.
They might change the pillows or the wallcovering in 10 years but the overall home should be one that survives through all the trends. Sustainability is key, so quality is really important. One senses that the primary objective is the subliminal energy of each room, underscored by an intrinsic awareness of connection with location. CBD is also working with local Charleston developers on the holistic design of luxury oceanfront condominiums, cottages and a new Beach Club on Kiawah called The Cape, infusing the iconic Kiawah aesthetic with modern luxury. The Cape development is set to be completed before Fall 2024. Fresh eyes on your own furnishings can feel like a whole new space.

The wood also paves entire ceilings and walls and serves as trim; its natural warmth is enhanced by walls finished in Benjamin Moore White Dove plaster, applied by Jess Artistic Designs. For contrast, details are painted in Farrow & Ball Tar, a soft, moody bronzed black that changes from gray to brown in the shifting light. The soapstone kitchen island, which will patina over time, is paired with marble that reappears in all the bathrooms. I think it’s extremely important to get a photographer who really can capture that for you and then invest in it.

I talked to some people who knew mills that were good at printing on linens, but nobody knew how to do wovens, or where I would go to find a weaver. It seemed like I would have to travel, possibly even out of the U.S., to really get down and dirty and understand it. And so it was just this dream that was out there.
