The Nest Mini appears like an excellent option for a child’s room, while you might want the original Nest Audio’s fuller sound for the living area and the musically inclined Home Max for a game room or basement. There’s no reason to purchase the older Home Hub other than a potentially cheaper price; even then, you’d probably be better off spending that little bit extra for the improvements. The Mini now has three microphones instead of two so the Google Assistant can better hear and understand your requests.
The Nest Hub takes the best of Google's app ecosystem and Assistant and combines it with Nest smart home powers to create a powerful home hub. There isn't much room in such a small device for large improvements, but somehow Nest pulled it off. Twice the bass and more on-device smarts make this a smart buy. The bigger the screen size is, the better the user experience.
However, given the right circumstances and depending on where you look, you can frequently snag some bargains on each of the Home devices. The real question is whether you should rush out and buy one, now that they're officially on sale. At $100 (£90, AU$149), it's priced $30 less than the first-gen Hub, right at launch (although, to be fair, sales aren't hard to come by). The key to solving for that variable can be found in the degree to which the prospect of tracking your sleep from the nightstand appeals to you. If sleep tracking is something you're even remotely interested in, that makes the second-gen Nest Hub a must-have element of your smart home.
